My own colony seems to have gone into early dormancy too, so perhaps these ants like it fairly warm to be fully active from what I have observed?

Being away at university, or on a long holiday, does mean you cannot check on your ants as often as someone like myself who is at home most of the time. While you may not get to feed them or see what your ants are doing, it does mean you get to observe what changes the colony has gone through. The old saying of "absence makes the heart grow fonder" sort of applies here, as you have probably been wondering how your ants were progressing; and what a nice surprise to see the queen has laid some eggs.
