I just bought a Messor barbarous queen and workers and I want to make an out world with a moat so I want to know if they can swim or will they all just go and drown trying to escape?

Ants cannot swim, but they may use leaves or twigs like a raft to cross water. If the moat is wide Messor barbs would probably just fall in and drown, though this will only happen to foraging workers who climb up the tank.

I would recommend you use fluon instead.

The picture below is the rough idea I had for my out world and I did intend to use P.T.F.E liquid on the outer wall but following your advice and the fact that l don`t want to lose my ants to drowning, it looks like it`s back to the drawing board...

You can make a very simple outworld by taking a container, drilling a hole to attach it to your formicarium, then taking off the lid and applying fluon to the inner wall.

Thanks for all your advice, I will take it on board. I didn't really want something simple as I have that already and wanted something different. Lol

If you can make some kind of escape proof lid to cover the out world, and another for the main nest (both of which can be opened for feeding or cleaning), then connect them via a piece of tubing, maybe you won't need a moat to keep the ants in where you want them to be. I am looking forward to how this set up turns out in the long run.
