My ant have just died I can't make my mind up, buy new ants now (5th- 15th October) and hibernate them in November or in December or would it be better if I would just buy them in Spring and avoid hibernation?
EDIT: I have forgotten to mention that I would like to keep them in soil based formicarium

There is still time to start with a new colony as you don't need to hibernate them until the middle of November.

That's great Thank you I wasn't sure about exact times when I should hibernate them. Ants in my gardens already seem to slow down

Ants in my gardens already seem to slow down Don't forget that the nights are getting much colder in the UK and days are also autumnal, meaning that the wild ants outside will prepare that bit earlier for hibernation than ants kept indoors.

Depends on how good the shed is, as an old shed will get colder than a new one. Most guys who keep ants outside in a shed use an old blanket or cardboard to insulate the set up; but I keep all my ants in a cool room over winter just in case they might freeze in our old shed.

If she has no brood it is unlikely she will lay eggs this late on in the year. Give her another month and if she is still without any brood then you can hibernate her.

Is there a guide about ways to look after queens over the winter?
