You can check what Queen Ant Shop has in stock in our Ant Links by clicking the button just under the forum banner. James who is the owner of that site is also a member here, and he does sell nice healthy ants as do all our trusted ant sellers. You will find that more boards open as you post and your rank rises, so have fun exploring

I received a colony of M. barbarus from QAS last week - excellent healthy little colony and good postage and packaging.

Is Messor barbarus one of the easiest harvester ants to keep if you're from Europe? What other species are suitable for formicarium life?

Is Messor barbarus one of the easiest harvester ants to keep if you're from Europe? What other species are suitable for formicarium life? Having failed twice at keeping Messor structor for more than 7 months, and as my Messor hesperius queen died recently; but I have 2 thriving colonies of Messor barbs, one colony is 3 years old and the other is coming up for 7 years, you can guess what my answer to this question is? FormicaLondon, Shane and several other members have all kept long running journals of this species, and had lots of success with these ants. It is true to say that some smaller colonies or a single queen may die out, but they are without a doubt the easiest European Harvest Ant species in my honest opinion.

For feeding barbarus are there seed food sources you could by from a supermarket or health food shop? I.e maybe some bird feed or other?

I use wild finch seed for mine from the local pet shop. They seem to like them.

Canary or Finch seeds are fine, as both are safe if sold by a pet store. Grass seeds are okay as long as they are not treated with pesticides or fungicides. If you have a local (click link) Jollyes pet store they have large bins full of canary and finch seed mixes, and for around £1 you will have enough seed to last even a large colony a good 6 months.

I agree with wood~ant, my messors are fed on finch seed, I mix this with niger seed and dandelion seed's and they love it.

Sounds good, I suppose it's such a cheap food source that doesn't go off like insects etc so make an ideal species to keep in captivity.

Sounds good, I suppose it's such a cheap food source that doesn't go off like insects etc so make an ideal species to keep in captivity. Only if moisture gets onto the seeds, as then they either germinate or bond together and grow a blue mould. Kept in a plastic pot or bottle cap seeds will keep fresh for about 3 weeks, so I give my Messors fresh dry seeds every 2 to 3 weeks to avoid the mould problem.
