You know your desperate to catch a queen when you start catching bigger ants in the hope it's a queen...later realising its not...I saw a big black ant in my yard today and caught it...thinking it wonders alone and I'm use to seeing only small black ants...later discovered a heap of them...pretty thing. Don't know the species. Anyway what I wanted to ask is...does the queen ants always have like a hunch back type look? Is there certain distinct behaviour I should look for?

I am no expert at identifying ants but a queen has a larger gaster than worker ants and the middle section is larger in most ants.

I wouldn't worry Josh, as even a lot of experts can get things wrong; and they all started knowing nothing at all about ants, which is why we learn together and help each other out.

Hehe. Funny how goodluck gestures change from place to place. Anyways...it was like 34 degrees celcius just yesterday...so I had hoped that after the rain it would get warm again and that might get the ants in action...is that how it usally works? Coz then I'm in bad luck coz is now cold after the rain. And the particular specie I'm looking for is very inactive at night. So they like the warmth I geuss.

When it is warm after rain, they usually fly I believe.

By the way, I believe the hunch back thing you mentioned in the first post is the middle section of the queen, if it is bigger than the head it is most likely a queen although that might not be the case in some specie. Do you still have her though or did you release her.

The "hunch back" mentioned being the thorax, which is this shape in most queen ants as it contains the muscles used for the flight wings in the vast majority of ant species.

He-he. I released it...I realized it was just a worker. Did not look any different than the others I eventually found. I will keep waiting...I guess. Too cold now for any ants to fly. Apparently my camera was on a bad setting so it should take nice close-up photos...I will give it a try later on.
