That depends, some mites only eat dead matter, so they could be eating the ants left-overs. But if they are covering the ants they could be parasitic mites and those are not good

Hi in my sanguinea colony I have little red mites are these a threat. To my colony would post a pic but doesn't allow me on my phone A colony would clean them self of mites but some don't .
Its easy from just a single queen to get rid of mites.
Get 2 cotton buds . Put one cotton bud in a dish spared a little flat, and make the other cotton bud flat to a little like a disk shape.
Now need to be alittle fast as queen may just run as soon as she lands on cotton, Put queen on top of the first cotton bud and be alittle fast and place the second cotton bud on top of her lightly. Now hold it down a little very lightly and the queen will push her way out and as she does so the mites will get curt though cotton strands with out harming queen.
Do this about twice with new cotton. Then just check on queen with a microscope to see she's fully clean from them.
That's only way you can get them off queen, If colony has them Your forced to make them move out of old nest and in to a new one all time if mites build up to much.

I have heard of a few people who have used lemon juice to eliminate the mites by lightly misting the workers in the foraging area.
