I always think as the first day of spring as the first day of March, but often the arrival of spring flowers and even insect life can pop up in February; and this winter even my sister has seen Ladybirds during January, and she lives in the North West of England near the Pennine Hills.
Spring may be just a few days away, or perhaps a few more weeks yet. But nature seems not to know if it is time to wake up, or stay in winter mode for a bit longer looking at the signs of life in our garden, as plants are growing so early; but a good cold snap could soon stop them in their tracks, as cold weather is forecast for next week and we haven't had a whiff of snow yet down here in the south of England. So when do you think spring has arrived where you live?

We always have the local wildlife spring into action here where I am , we have the local mallards building there nests and laying first eggs by second third week of February and that's seems like spring to me. by the time the baby's hatch its about two weeks into March so weather is usually milder by then : )

Woke up to snow in Newcastle out in it all day not fun We hardly ever get snow here in the south. I wish we could just have even a sniff, as I can't wait to see the faces on our 2 spaniels who have never seen snow It usually lasts a day here and then gone with the rain. We have the snowdrops coming up with the daffodils and the catkins are fully out in the woods.

There is Snow here where I live. But it seems to be melting fast.
My room temperature has been a mild cold though out this cold weather. And my colony of ant's are still hibernating at least and sluggish

While most of the Lasius nests around here have yet to send out early foraging scouts, I actually saw a Myrmica rubra foraging in the wild this morning. Now this is a sign of an early spring, as while she may not have been moving along fast, she was not walking sluggish either.

We are still getting a touch of frost some nights, but this means a sunny day to follow, like today is. This month has flown by and it is only 2 more days to March. The daytime temperatures are warming up fast now, so it will not be long before we see wild ants roaming around and a new season of life as winter releases its cold grip. Daffodils, crocus and snowdrops are already in bloom, so it looks like spring has sprung here in the south of England. Midday the ant room is reaching almost 22 Celsius with the full sun on it, so things are likely to be very busy once we get into March.
