Taking pictures/videos is a very rewarding part of keeping ants. Weather it's to share your colonies online, or watch your ants up close in parts your eye can't see, it's just one of my most important parts in the hobby. So that's why I have come up with this guide to the best footage! Cameras: I find that cameras always work best. The Nikon DSLR D3200 is a very good beginner Camera However the Nikon L330 is almost twice as good and almost half the price! That's why I recommend this camera, as it also includes a pretty impressive zoom in macro mode. The thing I mostly use for taking videos or pictures however is my IPod touch 5th generation. It focuses very well and has a very good zoom to look close up on the ants. Mode: Using macro mode is the best. Super Macro is also good on some cameras, for IPhones you can buy special lenses but I haven't bothered yet. Portrait or Landscape: Landscape. This catches the most of the action, instead of 'peeping through a door in portrait' as I like to say Lighting: Always use a torch or built in flashlight for videos, not pictures as you can't see focusing when it's being taken. In Video however you can focus whilst it's on, which brings out the most colours. Focusing: Use manual focus, this makes sure you can follow the action everywhere and it doesn't suddenly come out of focus whilst recording.

For taking really great video footage I can recommend this camcorder, the Panasonic HC-X900 as it not only has the touch screen but is one of the few cheaper camcorders to have a full colour viewfinder. The macro is excellent and for the prices your cannot beat Panasonic in my honest opinion. All my videos are filmed on this camcorder, while is ideal for both indoor and outdoor use, as the viewfinder helps a lot when you are lying down on your stomach to get up close to a wild ant nest.

Once I get my new camera, which is the best online video hosting site? I assume there something similar to photobucket but are there good ones that don't take an age to upload? Also I've noticed that some peoples videos are quite short, is there a reason for this?

The video actually shows the camera used is this one Trueviper Nikon P330 , not the L330.

I know I noticed that after I posted even though I typed in the l330 on youtube lol. No matter, I've decided to get the Nikon P330 now as it's a much better quality camera then the l330.
Here's a macro video sample

Also I've noticed that some peoples videos are quite short, is there a reason for this? Depends on the device from which the video footage is transferred, as AVI uploads faster but not all cameras or camcorders record in this format. Mobile devices such as iphones are often limited to the length of video, whereas a good camcorder will film for as long as the battery holds out. Many digital cameras can record for several minutes, but I always use a camcorder as it use a USB link straight to its own programme and then I just upload the finished video direct to YouTube. Then just take the video link and post it via the clapperboard on the posting box of the forum.

I joined a photography forum a few weeks ago just to ask questions about macro lens and have just posted up a thread asking about the Nikon P330 and whether or not there are any better alternatives with a max budget of £250. There are some very knowledgeable members on that site (Amateur Photographer) so lets see what they come up with. P.S. I did the same thing when I bought my first high end acoustic guitar a couple of years ago and was recommended a right cracker which I still have and love to bits. That's what I love about forums, if you ask the right questions you can hopefully avoid the many mistakes and pitfalls of delving into a new hobby. I love the internet and have gained so much from the research into the many interests that I have
