Hello!
Welcome to my Lasius Niger B Colony journal!
This colony only has a queen, who landed in my back garden at the right moment for me to capture her, she sits in my airing cupboard and has some small larvae at present! I plan to allow her to hatch these, then hibernate her somewhere, and move her into some sort of set up next spring! Maybe not an Alpha Ants kit seen as they aren't containing my ants very well as it stands!!

I still have escapes threw the farm area of my Alpha ants starter kit and they are quite bigger generation workers!

If they are escaping the foraging tank, simply use PTFE near the top of the glass. Escapes around the farm is a bit tricky to solve. I will try a heavy stone on top and let you know how it goes! Lasius niger are smart, but bold!!

This queen has two very large larvae, and she now has a cocoon too! Like the Flavus, though maybe slightly less so, the brood is developing very nicely and quickly! Workers in all my colonies by my birthday? October 14th!

This queen has laid some more eggs I believe, she will probably eat some to feed the many larvae she now has, as well as the 4 cocoons! I plan to buy an Antstore 20x10x10 "foraging arena" and simply block the holes with bungs, and use it as a small tank for the species, it will fit well on my windowsill and will allow the colony some room, as well as me then having a sandwich farm, a acrylic style carved farm and then a tank for my 3 colonies!

Strangely, this queen has a huge pile of eggs now, as well as about 8 cocoons. I mentioned a week ago about her eating the new eggs, but she has only added to them! If she keeps 75% of them, then they will have a large population boost. I need to decide if I want to hibernate them, any thoughts?

One of the cocoons has gone very dark and is receiving some special attention! Could it be??

Absolutely delighted to say that this morning, one small Lasius Niger callow worker is roaming around the tube!

A second worker was born overnight! When they reach around 5/6 I shall be placing their tube into a small tank.

I released this colony as promised and they have sealed up the end of the tube and forage regularly.
