Finally some of the mating flights are taking place up here in bonnie Scotland I only caught the tale end of it but managed to capture 6 either niger or lemani queens...also looks like the red ants are thinking about taking flight too...yipee!! DeanSyme

so you're going to hope for a colony from your captured queens? I've never started a colony, what process and set-up will you be using?
Hope you can show us some pics of your formicariums!

Lasius niger queens are a dull brownish charcoal colour, while Formica lemani are more of a shiny coal black, plus they are slightly larger in size than niger I saw lots of male Lasius flavus alates in several nest mounds today, so it is evident that the mating flights are far from over yet, and should continue well into August for sure. In fact Myrmica species often do wait until late summer, as Jenant has had alates from Myrmica rubra flights crawling around her hair when we've been walking up on the Downs during late afternoons in August, and they even fly as late as just before sunset when the evenings are warm and humid
