I received this Lasius neglectus colony of 1 queen and 15 workers from phasmes222 on the 09/09/15. They look identical to Lasius niger and I shall be comparing the growth of this colony to my Lasius niger colony of a similar size. The nest was purchased from deansyme's website . Its a small size but perfect for a founding colony to develop and grow. The colony moved into it within the hour and they quickly started foraging in the outworld. So the nest and ants were purchased from members of this forum. This cool forum is now a 1 stop shop Untitled by

I love the yellow base of the acrylic nest. It contrasts well with the ants and I can easily see everything that's happening.

That yellow colour does show the ants up well, it makes a change from the white which you see everywhere. I do find the white tends to glare depending which way the camera is turned. Good luck with this colony I hope they do well.

That looks great. I know that style of nest is very popular, but I wonder does the lack of dark areas not upset the ants at all?
I am going to look into getting one myself. I guess the seller is listed in the selling section.

Thanks. You can create a dark area quite easily by placing a tea towel over the nest section. I generally leave them in the light because they get used to it when they have no other alternative. Lasius are as tough as nails. It's the sensitive ant species that you have to be careful with. Darkness would always be best.

This colony has slowed down allot. The queen doesn't seem to want to lay any more eggs although there are some cocoons ready to hatch. Although L.neglectus look similar to L.niger, the L.niger colony has produced many more eggs for the moment. Colony update 07/10/15 by

The L.neglectus colony has just started to increase in activity. One of the workers is actively foraging, the rest just stand still most of the time. 2016-02-23_10-49-28 by che hawkins, on Flickr

My neglectus colony hasn't been developing as fast as the niger and flavus colonies. I expected more speedy development from this invasive species. I removed the colony from their nest back into a test-tube set up. They already feel more comfortable and the foraging has started again. 20160506_191934 by che hawkins, on Flickr
