Today I made 6 videos of my local wood ants, here are the first 3 showing winged males and females out warming themselves in the early May sunshine.

It's incredible, seeing so much activity this early! Lucky you for the sun you had, so gloomy here in East Anglia. Did you speed the videos up a bit? The ant activity looks very fast

No we haven't speeded the film up, they are naturally that fast in the warm sun. This sandy heathland area, is near the Cowdray Polo grounds just outside Midhurst in Sussex. It's a vast area that becomes a baked sun trap, even more so as we seem to be having summer weather at the moment. The New Forest is an excellent place to see them to, I am just wary of taking the dogs down there now, with it being an "Alabama Rot" area that has caused a few deaths. Only about 40 mins from here it is good for ant spotting

Nice videos wood. Will be down new forest in early June so hopefully will see some myself. Bolderwood drive has a forest track with some big nest mounds.
