I copy in this from the How many ants (Formicidae) are there? button at "Number of species recorded in Formicidae: 11839. Date: 04-Feb-2006" This number, of course, only relflects those species which have been given Latin names. The real number of biological species is at least twice this, perhaps far more. New and old tools, genetic characterization and more precise morphological characterization, are revealing new ant species on a daily basis to ant systematics researchers.

I found another site today which gives information about the species numbers of ants worldwide. As new species are often being discovered, please take these estimates at face value only, as many more ants and other insects may yet to be found; and new kinds are evolving all the time in less documented areas of our planet www.greensmiths.com/ants.htm
