Hi everyone I just ordered a Myrmica rubra colony of ebay for £20.00! I got a colony with 2 queens and 30+ workers with all stages of brood! I have made the plaster nest jenant posted about in ant formicaries for them. I will keep a diary for them when they arrive. I was wondering if anyone could give me tips on how to care for them? Also has anyone been stung by them >:(apart from woody and is it painful? Thanks very much!

Their sting is much like having a red hot needle pushed into your skin, similar to a nettle sting if you've ever been stung by them. Oddly enough the common stinging nettle has formic acid just like ants do, and both stings hurt for about 10 minutes before they begin to wear off I've never kept them, only seen Myrmica in wild nests by the way, so good luck with your new colony

Guys I had a disaster putting them in my plaster nest! I didnt know they could escape from the sides so I should have lined it with vaseline. I lost about 10 workers and I only have 22 left. I wrapped it in tinfoil for know but I am going out to find an M.rugiodnus colony to find some brood and boost it.

Another huge disaster! My entire colony escaped! >:(I was able to catch them all apart from one of the queens. I moved them all into a little jar for now and I will go out to boost them!
