Nice pics Sammy If the ants you found are in Ireland they will either be Myrmica scabrinodis, M. rubra or M. ruginodis. The difference between the last 2 species is minimal, as the latter has longer epinotal spines sited on the top of their thorax than rubra has.

OK, I've been looking at a lot of rubra photos and I'm pretty sure its M. rubra

hey sammy. Have you found the main nest? I just moved house the other day andf I have found a few m.rubra ants walking around the place but I have only seen 6 ants and a few ants having a war! I havent found the nest but mainly the ants we usually find around where we live are myrmica species arent they. Have you ever found T.erractum??

Hey, I don't think I has found the main nest really, I'm not sure but I think m.rubra must have large nests, and a lot of tunnels, I've found loads of active tunnels around 10m
