I have just ordered 2 colonies of Camponotus cruentatus and was considering placing a small heat mat at the end of the plaster nests I am going to make for them. From what I have read however, heat mats are infra red heating and not necesarily direct heating - anybody use articificial heating or have any info on these?
Thanks

as they are infra red they will not heat the air but they heat any objects (ie the plaster, the ants, brood etc), so are great for getting a nest to move to a new location if they like it warmer. I'm using one on my pheidole at the moment, and the only slight problem is the condensation on the plastic, but other than that it's fine. I know it not a great pic but you can see what I mean
