hi I have found out that Lasius niger forage at night once I woke up at night and went down to see them lots of ants were ripping up a dead fly.

You'll find that many British ants and those which also live in places which have very cold winters, will forage almost 24hrs a day during the summer. The reason for this is, ants that hibernate have to build up a store of food reserves to keep them alive until next spring.
Only when it is cold and wet do the ants stay inside the nest, but on warm summer nights they hunt and are very active.
