Sorry for posting so many threads, but they are all genuine different questions!
Do you know if the different messor breeds will live under ground (as in do they dig) I've only ever seen people with them in Ytong/plaster nests, would they dig if given the chance?

Actually Adam I do prefer members to post different answers in a separate thread, as it makes them easier to answer and move later on into the right boards Wood and I keep Messor barbarus and have also kept Messor structor. All have been kept in soil nests, as in the wild Messor species do dig. Check out wood's journal here} queenant.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=alienants&action=display&thread=3164The added photo is of a wild Messor barbarus nest, just click on it to make it larger. Do you have any pictures of your Messor colonies in soil nests? I've made a plaster nest, and also a giant soil nest using a double glazed pane, I don't have any ants in them yet.
Why do you have two breeds of Messor? what's the difference between structor and barbarus?

structor can have more than one queen at a time where as barbarus normally only have one, but barbarus do have quite big major compared with the queen where as structor tend to have smaller majors.

Do you have any pictures of your Messor colonies in soil nests? I've made a plaster nest, and also a giant soil nest using a double glazed pane, I don't have any ants in them yet. Do we have pictures? We have lots of them in our Ant Photo Gallery board. Here is just one example of how Jenant and I keep our Messor barbarus in soil. queenant.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photos&action=display&thread=2252Also if you click open the button pic on the forum front page which says Jen's HD Videos on it, you will find all of her videos are like this example below www.youtube.com/profile?user=anttenae#p/u/10/0Cq5EBlOV7YRemember to click on the HD button to view it in full High Definition quality; and you will also find lots more videos done by Jen of most of our ants. Other photos of my ants (past and present) can be found on my Ant Hill Wood site which is linked in my signature picture. I must add that I did not keep Messor barbarus and M. structor in the same tank. Neither did they use the same foraging area or meet up in any way, as this would have been a disaster with fatal consequences
