If you've never read a book by James Herbert, might I suggest you rush out and buy his very first book called The Rats, as you will most certainly want to buy other books by him once you have read this masterpiece of horror writing. Sadly he died yesterday aged 69 at his home in East Sussex, but his books have inspired several good horror movies; and his genius and talent as an author will live on for centuries to come. I think I have read the rats. Did they try to chew into a house with a family inside? Did he also write 'The Fog'? Saw that when I was about 12. Found it quite scary! I have had many a sleepless night thanks to my parents movie collection. They have this film from the nineteen fifties I think 'Quatermass and the pit'. It is one of my favourite films - but it puts chills down my spine!

Yes, he did write The Fog; but the movie was not the same and only loosely based on his book, as it was about the ghosts of pirates who came to a town in the USA. In the book the fog actually changed people into something horrible, like killer zombies. It is such a long time since I read his early stuff, but the man eating rats invading London and the rest of Britain makes your skin crawl as it is so descriptive and gory.

For its time, this was such a good film for special effects and really is a classic. The Quatermass Experiment is another worth watching, as they have tried to update these since with more modern movies; but so far the originals are still the best. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quatermass_(TV_serial)

Just asked dad about the quatermass experiment. He says he has a three or four part series made in the seventies that might be called that. Said it had John mills as professor Quatermass. He reckoned it was something about stone circles. Mum and dad collect things. Thousands of films - I watch so many... But I never want to go to a cinema - hate the seats!
