You may remember I posted months back about my buying my boyfriend an ant farm for christmas? Well I have got a starter kit form Ant Store, which came with the tank, ant farm, pipet, tweezers, but there's this little tub thing with a white lid, the lid has a little opening that protrudes the bottle, what is this for?
The ants are doing well, there favourite food at the moment seems to be those little tiny moths, and wow they are quick!!!
Thanks

Does it look a little like this, with a small circular opening? If so, it's meant to be connected via tube to the actual ant farm, and you put their food in it.

I have the same one, it is a water trough.

It is a water hopper, used mainly for cage birds; but used as a water source for the ant set up in this case.

You can just fill it up, turn out over and it's ready to go. I would advise using something in the opening like cotton wool, otherwise you may find that the ants drown in the water. Like this....

I wonder how much water they think ants drink, as that water hopper is huge and would be like a town drinking an ocean of water. As my own ants get enough from droplets of spray, I would personally would not use such a large water reservoir, as unchanged water would go stagnant; and you have to remember that you do need to take it out every time you need to refill it with fresh water.
This is fine with a very small colony, but when the colony has a lot of foraging workers it could prove to be a bit of a problem, as you need to fully open the foraging arena to take the hopper out. I know how my Formica lusatica rush out each time I open the glass lid of their foraging tank, and on a warm day it can result in a few escaping ants. The choice is yours Nina, but ants do not really need a water source, which to them is so big it is is the size of Loch Ness.
