So I have a couple of what I assume to be Lasius niger Queens in a small plastic box with damp cottonwool inside, they have laid eggs and I am just playing the waiting game now, fingers crossed the first little workers will be along to help them soon

realise this is possibly the most common and boring ant and this noob journal is likely of little interest to anyone but myself. However I find it interesting! Hahaha here are a couple of photos of her majesty, its hard to get a clear photo because she is in a translucent container but she very kindly posed for a super close up mugshot, you can also see one of the eggs that was against the wall;

You say that but it's been added to my favourites! Lasius Niger is never boring!

So I came back to work this morning to find that the very first worker ant has been born and looks like there are 2-3 other close to eclosing. Queen seems very active and nice full gaster so I'm really happy with her progress. Can't wait until there are a good few workers so I can test them out in the formicarium I am developing and see how it holds up

Yep I'm in the same boat as the others I like reading about any ant, no matter how many journals of the same species there is. Everyone goes about something different. Also they won't be boring for long, just wait till they show their Naughty side

Good start, WolfMan. Of course we're interested! I remember being overjoyed when I saw my first L.niger callow being helped around by her mother. And I concur with Dermy: once there's a few hundred workers you'll be quelling escape attempts every time you feed them. It'll be fun!

Hahaha The most common ants are easy to find and often the easiest to keep Wolf, but whether they are common or rare I could not name one single species that is boring or of little interest as they're all fascinating in their own way.

Once a few more workers arrive, you could try feeding them. Greenbottles or house flies should go down well if you can find them.

Moving along nicely now! Another worker is just darkening up as we speak! Looking at the various brood I think there could be 5 workers stumbling around by tomorrow!
Finally got to the exciting bit, I'm glad I had the patience and left them to it now. Will try them with a bit of protein jelly tomorrow and see how they get on. Up until now they have been weaned on a drop of honey here and there. I think Set Honey is better for them as there is less potential for drowning.

The protein jelly is great as it contains the nutrients for the larvae.
