The prize of a free ant colony will be posted to the lucky winner by first class mail on Monday the 18th May. We will need to have the winners name and address by the 17th, so they will be notified via PM and email the day judging has been done and the lucky winner selected.

This competition is now closed as we have a winner who gave all 5 correct answers. They were as follows}
1. What is the name given to the insect family which are commonly known as ants? Answer = Formicidae.
2. By what Latin name is an ant nest known as? Answer = Formicary (not Formicarium as this is an artificial man made ant nest).
3. What is the common most major difference between Formicine and Myrmicine ants? Answer = Formicine ants spray or exude formic acid, whereas Myrmicine ants have a sting to inject their venom.
4. What name is given to an Entomologist (Insect Scientist) who studies ants? Answer = A Myrmecologist.
5. Which has the largest colony numbers, (a) Army Ants - Eciton, (b) Driver Ants - Dorylus, or (c) Leaf Cutter Ants - Atta species? Answer = Dorylus Driver Ants which can reach colony numbers of up to 20 million ants.
Atta Leaf Cutter Ants may attain a colony between 2 to 5 million, but such large colonies are rare above the 3 million mark. Eciton Army Ants usually peak at around the million mark, and if a colony gets too large then daughter queens are produced and the colony splits up and forms 2 or more factions, with the old queen taking about half the workers and her daughter queens taking a percentage and budding off from the old colony.
