17th July 2015
I've received a Camponotus ligniperda queen with 5 workers and brood as ordered from Ants kalytta. The colony is healthy and in exceptional condition. This is the 2nd colony I've had from Ants kalytta and can't recommend this dealer enough, very, very good quality colonies.
Some of the workers appear to be quite large, could these be medians?
The test tube nest has been placed in a vivarium with a heat mat placed on the outside of the back wall, the temperature being roughly 23-24 degrees centigrade. I'm very happy with this colony and can't stop looking at it lol

Unfortunately since July, 4 of the workers have died one by one. The very last worker also seems to be on it's last legs now and doesn't seem to want to go back into the test tube nest. The queen has some brood though and is doing fine so we'll see if this colony does better next year after hibernation.

Found the last worker on its back today, dead as a door nail I'm afraid to report. I've no idea why all 5 workers have perished and it's a sad thing that its happened but at least the queen seems to be ok still. I don't suppose there was anything I could have done to prevent it. Oh well.....

This is a species I find is very fussy about foraging for food if the colony is small, although a few ant keepers manage to get a colony to grow large and do well with hundreds of workers. The small colony I am keeping now is my third try with this species, but to be honest if a queen loses all her workers she is sadly doomed to die 9 times out of 10, even if she still has some brood, as queens never seem to forage.

If she does die that will be a shame, we'll just have to see what happens. If I do decide to have another crack at this species which I probably will I'll get a colony with 30 plus workers. I've had zero success with Camponotus queens that only have 5-10 workers.
