14.7.09 quick update it dawned on me the other day that I may have put just a little too much soil in. (sorry the a great pic nor does it help being taken just after spraying) but you can also see under the yellow plastic that is now in there, they dug a big chamber (about the size of my fist) but it had no fungus in it but was open to the garden so I covered it over just so I could moisten the soil. they really must be growing now as the amount of food they are taking back to the nest is getting more and more as each day goes by ;D and they reall seem to like home grown cabbage.

I must admit it has seemed to have gone quiet lately, you get the odd post now and then but even they are few and far between, so it could be peoples interest is fading out, but I know mine ain't lol I've just had less time than normal. Just wait till winter is in sight then you'll get the same odd questions about hibernation lol

stupid question, but why are they called pavement ants? or is it just because they live under the pavement

I have spoken to Antstore before and they say they keep them on because they might get them in the future, eg Atta sexdens they did not have about a month or two ago, but it would be better if shops could put an estimated date on when they would have them. Antsectopia tho I don't know why they still have their "Cerapachys biroi" since I don't think I've ever seen them in stock lol, but I am still waiting for P.diversus which he said he should get soon Ever if they did like kalytta does where he has what he thinks he will have and another bit called "long term not available" so at least you now what he will not have in any time soon.

I never like to buy off of ebay if I can as some people sell unmated queens just with the wings cut off (not saying everyone does, as I did buy my leaf cutter off ebay, but I knew the guy) but other than that were there dead ants? other than that I really can't think of anything that would kill off a nest that quickly.

by the way did you tip the ants in (I'm guessing they were in a test tube) cause if so you could have stressed them a bit to much? just a thought. what about food? may I ask where did you order them from? but I am sorry for your loss

ebay you can buy them in bulk for very little. maybe if I didn't feed my ants for a day then they might eat a whole one, but I like to give fresh every day. who and I've when I first got them I have no male yet they were still increasing in number for about 2 months, but they could have been mated before hand. to be honest I never boil any food I give my ants, they don't have em cooked in the wild so why should I.

OK I tried breeding flies, and well it smelt horrid, even tho it was down the bottom of the garden you could still smell it if the wind blew toward the house, so in the end (3 days) a got rid of them. OK a new food source which someone gave me a while ago. Cockroaches (Dubai blaptica) the best feed insect I've used: they have very little smell, they make very little noise, they can't climb, they can't fly (adult males do use there wings to slow them if they fall or are dropped) and they breed very quickly. all you need is a simply box (lid or no lid) a few egg boxes and a shallow tray for water (gel)and you might want to use a small heat mat to speed up growth. as for food I use crushed cat biscuits, and carrots/apples etc, but you can use anything they will eat it, (even dead locust). I find there is little point in feeding an adult to any of my ants because they are just so big, even my Pheidole 500 worker+ can't eat a whole one. a mated female by the way you may want to tell other people that you are going to keep roaches BEFORE you get them lol

9.6.09 a bit of bad news, my mum has chosen to re-do her garden and sprayed weed killer all over it, so I can no longer get food from her garden and the other day my heat lamp broke so the temperature dropped for just over a day. good news is my next door neighbor (not at my mums house) has moved in and they say they don't really care about there garden ;D so it will overgrow nicely. fungus is getting quite a bit bigger now, in fact it can now be seen on the other side of the tank as well, so it about 12x6x18-19cm, could be bigger in the middle where I can not see but it is certainly getting bigger.
