Just beware of the heat as I have had 4 colonies wiped out today probably because of the heat.

Heat is a double edged sword unfortunately. It can speed up brood development but cook the ants and/or dry them out...I take it you didn't have them in direct sunlight? I like to leave my colonies on the windowsill between 8 and 9pm, where the dusk light falls and warms them up (But not too much).
Sorry to hear about your losses, the relevant journals should soon be archived.

They are kept in the loft where they have been for the past couple of years. I left the hatch open to help it vent but it must of got so hot it literally wiped out every colony in one afternoon. I had a large Lasius emarginatus colony up there and even they was all killed.

I'm sorry for your loss. While I fight with the thermostat and my will of coldness over heat for founding a colony and my wife's pleasure of temperature it seems like you had the extreme side of things. Today was a hot one, and I would be a touch devastated personally. may they all rest in piece. sorry to hear about your losses

Sad, sorry to hear you've lost so many ants and hope you get more soon. Thanks, I had already ordered a Messor queen and a small Formica sanguinea colony. The Lasius brunneus and emarginatus colony are harder to replace as I cannot find these for sale.

Lasius emarginatus have their nuptial flights quite soon, don't they? I'm sure you'll be able to replace them before long.

Sorry to hear you lost 4 colonies to the heat wave. I was concerned while I was away that my own ants might suffer, but apart from my A. senilis moving out from the nest into the foraging box to be near the water source, all my ants were fine as they were in shade. Good to hear you plan to get some more species to replenish your collection.
