The queen already has loads of larvae and pupae, as well as lots of worker ants; but over the past 3 days she has laid a new generation in the form of a large egg mass.

Looking very busy in there, Wood. It sure is, and that is just one chamber of 1 nest, as the rest of the 2 nests are full of brood too. Judging from my observations of this ant species workers seem to live to be 17 to 20 months old, with only a few deaths each year. Not sure how long the queen will live for, but this colony was well worth every penny in terms of longevity and entertainment value. I have them well trained too, as just a light tap on the foraging lid at feeding time makes all the workers retreat back down to the nest, so placing in any form form of food means not a single ant escapes.
