I have a wasp nest in my garden that I discovered a few weeks back and this evening I was in the garden just watching the wasps fly in as I sometimes do and witnessed something I have never seen. At the entrance of the nest I saw a large hover fly land nearby which I thought was a bit strange. It then began to edge closer and closer to the entrance hole seemingly oblivious to dozens of wasps flying in and out. It got so close the wasps where climbing over the hover fly to get in their nest but showed no aggression and completely ignored it. Then the hover fly disappeared into the nest entrance! Never seen anything like it before. I guess it's some sort of parasite of the wasps.
