About a year ago, I found a huge nest of Formica fusca, and I counted about eight queens in the nest. I collected one queen, no brood, and 7 workers. She laid loads of eggs, and the nest has now grown to about one hundred workers. They tunneled against the side of the tank, but in the last few weeks, her health had decreased . She kept falling on her back and waving her legs in the air. Then she died and I found her body yesterday. I was very sad about this because this colony were doing so well . I don't know what she died of, but I think it might have been old age. However, the mating flights of these ants will be soon, and I am lucky enough to have F.fusca living in a feild next door to me, so I might collect another queen and some workers and start again.

Sorry to hear this has happened Lasius flavus, It's happened to myself on many occasions and often annoys me to see a Queen doing so well, with plenty of brood and on their way to developing and then suddenly the Queen will die. It is frustrating and disappointing, but where there is failure, there is and will be success. I hope you have better luck next time.
