Most of my friends and family find it interesting that I have studied ants since I was a 10 year old, 49yrs now to be exact and I never grow tired of doing so ;D Even those who don't like ants themselves still look at my web site, as they love to see the photos of exotic ants I use from members of this forum. I reckon (and hope) that I will still be teaching young people and children about ants for a long time, even kids who haven't even been born yet. So when you guys have kids who want to know more about ants, send them my way and I'll be happy to help them By the way, did you know that if all animal life was placed in a pile for a ratio count, then about 20% of it would be made up of ants. It just shows how successfully they have colonized our planet, as you can find them almost everywhere except in the polar regions and a few very arid deserts. Apart from these places ants live in all temperate areas by the billions. Fascinating thought eh

I only know one guy who used to study ants and he is the only person I would ever speak to about them. If my friends come round I hide my ants in the airing cupboard as it would be really embarrassing if they found out as Northern Ireland is the most intolerant country in all of Europe. If I did speak to anyone about it everyone would call me a nerd and stuff. If someone does find my formicariums I say they are for growing plants.

I must admit I do but it can be very one sided lol, and I think most of the time they just get bored, but I have convinced at least one person to try at keeping them lol

When I first reared ants at 10 to 12 years of age (my memory is starting to fail me) it was something frown upon. All my siblings thought I was weird and those of my friends who knew thought the same.
Not very much different today, only I don't have to answer to any body now, but I still get the "stare" from passers by whenever I chance upon an ant or termite gyne and stop to catch them.

Enjoy and answer Honestly. Most people find ants are pests and can't see why anyone would keep them as pets, but a few find they are educational to study. At least they aren't creepy crawlies like some things, so I don't know why more females aren't into them; and why does anyone who doesn't know anything about ants call you "nerdy", as you need to know such things as ant anatomy and Latin to study ant species and name them properly

I think you are directing that nerd thing at me Zarbi so I will answer. Here, as I have said everyone is intolerant of something different. I will tell my closest, closest friends I collect ants. It usually comes across people as being nerdy and weird. I told someone I just met I liked ants and they said collecting ants was just sad and that buying them of the internet is tragic. People make cracks about me sometimes saying that I have no life and stuff like that. I think anything unusual here is considered nerdy.

I think you are directing that nerd thing at me Zarbi so I will answer. I don't think it was directed at you Formica, as it is the 2nd answer to the question. There is nothing "nerdy" about studying life and the wonders of nature, or people like Edward O. Wilson or Doctor M.V Brian would never have got their books published. Entomology is a science, but not all scientists are nerds, only the people who are ignorant about a subject call the experts nerds
