The old lady died peacefully in her sleep, aged 77 years and 9 months she had had a good life working all over the world studying ants and other social insects for the Entomology department of the university she worked for.
Her spirit rose from her body and although she had always believed the afterlife would be a place of light, she found herself in a place of utter darkness.
She could not see the others around her, but sensed their presence and smelled them. Very odd, as being dead she felt that all senses would no longer function, yet she could feel and smell despite not being able to see anything.
"Hello sister" another said as it touched her gently. Then others began to communicate with her. "It will not be long now before we leave and fly away" another told her.
Naturally she thought this must be the the waiting area before going off to heaven, or if flying then maybe becoming an angel perhaps?
Time passed, and some of the others gave her a sweet drink that was rather nice, but why would she need food she wondered to herself.
Suddenly the dark world she was in opened up to reveal sunshine and clear blue sky. Now she knew what she had become, as hundreds of winged ants flew from the darkness of the nest. The old Myrmecologist had become one of the creatures she had studied for so many years; and what joy to find herself a young winged queen ant able to fly and experience the life of one of her beloved insects; and later that day after mating with several young male suitors, she finally settled back into a nice dark hole to begin her very own ant colony.
At first she wonderd if it were a dream; but no, it was a dream come true
