So last year I had a small ant farm with a queen. That one ended in disaster (birds actually flew into the aquarium and destroyed everything, this next one will be kept inside) I don't like using sand and I don't like using the medium that comes with the uncle milton ant farms. I plan to dig up enough dirt to fill the ant farms and sift out all the rocks and grass and other debris. Then I plan to put the dirt in a pan and bake all of the moisture out and hopefully kill any remaining organism/bacteria/fungi that may be lurking. I really want to do this right this time. I'll be sure to post up pictures of my new set up. I'm eagerly awaiting warmer weather for the nuptial flights.

Sure sounds good, just remember to dampen the soil later when you have any ants in it If it's any consolation, I actually saw some foraging Lasius niger workers in my garden today, so things must be warming up nicely for that to happen

I live in the USA in Georgia and it is officially spring time however the weather is somewhat hard to predict. One day it will be warm and the next it will be freezing cold outside. Hopefully things will soon "level" out so I can start my search for some fresh queens.
