I have ordered a Lasius flavus queen from edu-sci. I am thinking of keeping them with Lasius niger but I don't think I will. I am keeping the journal. I ordered the colony on Monday but It will not be in stock till Friday which is when It will get posted. I am keeping a journal here. I am unsure of their feeding habits.

it would be quite likely the the L.nigers would kill them, so advisable not to. they are mainly subterranean feeders but if they can't find food below ground they will of cause come up and forage like most other ants would, but due to theie underground foraging they might be less inclined to forage in the day till the nest is quite big.

Maybe I should keep the colony in the tube until It is large. I am not sure about whether to keep them with the nigers but I think It will work. You see, I have a theory about ants like L.flavus as I believe that when colonys live together they sort of get used to the scent of each other. Once, I found a Lasius flavus, formica lemani, myrmica rubra and rugiodnus colony all living in the same hill. I believe that the ants will not fight if they do not compete for food. The colony is only getting posted today as edu-sci did not have It in stock until today, just on their catologue.

Well, great. My queen arrived in a broken tube. The glass was shattered everywhere in the letter. Fortunately, the queen and her one worker were safe in the very bottom of the tube. The queen's abdomen was very badly damaged, as a quarter of it had been slashed of. She was also missing an anttenae. I emailed Scott Wilson and he said that he will send out another one on Monday and It will be in a cardboard box like Lasius niger. For some reason, edu-sci seem to package their Lasius flavus in a letter and this is why the queen got smashed. She may survive though and I will have two queens as the queen is still alive.

WOW I find that strange - I have had a few orders off edu-sci and all arrived in a small (ish) brown cardboard box with the ants tube diagonally jammed in the box with a care sheet wrapped around it..... maybe they ran out! However they are awful at replying to emails!

The queen and her worker have dug a tunnel and chamber.

My new queen arrived today in the correct packaging . She has three workers and about three or four larva. My former queen seems to be okay down in her tunnel so I hope she will lay eggs and survive.

The original queen I ordered is now officially dead, but I do not know how as I just found her on the surface of the habitat. As for the other colony, they are doing great with a lot of brood. ;D

This colony is doing great in the airing cupboard as all the larvae are pupae now. ;D The colony will soon have 6 workers and the queen will lay eggs soon.
