Yesterday, I was able to obtain several queens of Myrmica rubra/ruginodis and Temnothorax nylanderi. The Myrmica rubra/ruginodis were flying amongst the grass whilst the Temnothorax nylanderi were flying off in a small wood-like area. The Myrmica rubra/ruginodis were very easy to obtain as they could be easily seen due to their red colour standing out of the green colour of the grass. However, finding the Temnothorax nylanderi queens was a different story as I took about, 1 hour to find several queens. They were nearly impossible to spot as the queens were very small and most of them were hiding amongst the leaf litter. I tried to take a video of them flying off but since my camera is not very good, I could not capture the queens getting out and climbing up a small, rotting wood ready to set off which was quite a shame as it was very interesting to watch. If you are interested in the location and time the flights occurred you can view the details here: queenant.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=mating&action=display&thread=5110 Blem12.

Nice to see you found Temnothorax having a mating flight, as these are only found in certain parts of England and Wales. Originally classed as Leptothorax nylanderi this species is very similar to a miniature Myrmica; and is distantly related belonging to the Myrmicine group of ants. With the very poor weather during July and August it is no wonder they waited until September to fly. I hope they all found nice colonies before they go into hibernation in 2 months time This video shows a nice healthy colony of T. nylanderi

Nice find, you're very lucky to have so many species living nearby.

Wow! I hope that my queens do as well as the one in the video. I might sell some but for now, I just want them to rest. Yes, I guess I am quite lucky that there is quite a diversity of species near me. Blem12.
