yesterday as you may know I recieved my P.Pallidula colony from antstore containing about 50 workers + Queen and also recievd a Beton Nest with 6 chambers...(See My Video On Youtube )... Today I placed them inside a small set up tank and they were swarming out of the tube....Although I have one problem.. these ants are so small they can fit through the mesh at the top of the tank... I have tried vaseline but that will not hold them in.... I have tried wet talc that goes hard but that doesn't help.. please can somebody tell me a substance that will stop them climbing ?? cheers

I use a normal plastic lid, with tiny airholes in the center that I made with a drawing pin. It should be enough to keep them in.
Good luck with these, you will find their appetite to be insatiable. ;D

Be careful about applying fluids or any substance with Pheds, they are so tiny they get stuck in most things. Ours are in a box with that mesh in the middle, their foraging box is like Timenova's, a few needle holes in a snappy food box! They are well secure, untill I feed them that is

I guess its a challenge to get them back in, if some escape jenant? Well, they are tiny and fast, not to mention you have to be careful not to hurt them. I had an escapee earlier, so I used a fine paintbrush to sweep her back into the box with no harm done. To answer your previous question, they can reach large colony sizes once they get going.

Yes, it will usually be that annoying gap between the lid and the container. This is why I prefer snap-on lids.

earlier today I changed the pallidulas Formicarium to a bigger tank.... The Reason I did this is because although this tank has no lid.... I found a substance named 'Hydromol ointment' which I smeared round the inside of the tank and I watched to pallidulas for a few hours and they will not even go near the stuff.. if one of them touches the substance with its antennae then they back away straight away

That should be good for a few days, but make sure you have a backup plan just in case. You don't want to find the little ladies everywhere.

I am praying that they do not escape.. they are so small comparing to many other species....I think somebody should develop a substance for ant formicariums at Anstore or wherever... then we would all be fine

my pheidole's are quite a fussy bunch ;D.. they won't eat half open brown or black crickets, they will not eat cut up mealworms, moths, wasps, waxworms, maggots, cut up beetles, etc etc... The strange thing is the only thing they will eat is squashed blue bottles... nope they will not eat green bottles.. just blue bottles.. it's very strange

they also seem to love the smaller insects that one worker would be able to carry.. they love tiny yellow fruit flies and tiny moths ;D
