By the way comments are allowed on this journal. Yay! That's good, as I have made a few on here Lol. A quick update they have blocked up 3 of the 5 nest holes and 1 of the 2 remaining has been made smaller while the other one is now much larger. They have moved the fly and piece of dead grass away from the nest holes but continue to visit the fly, they have now desinated 2 corners at the end of the ant farm as a rubbish tip. No casulties yet. I'm going to wait till tomorrow or Tuesday to look into the nest because I don't want to freak the queen out after what she's been through. ;D

I'm going to wait till tommorow or tuesday to look into the nest because I don't want to freak the queen out after what she's been through. ;D I think you'll find that tomorrow has only 1 m and 2 r's in it, and Tuesday should have a capital T. Sorry but these little mistakes show up in such a good journal post as you do

It's alright I don't mind being corrected, if you say it nicely, I have changed what you said was wrong. ;D

The ant's have dragged the spider I put in underground ,I assume, I don't know though because they have put sand particles over the glass sides so I can't see in. Perhaps to much light was getting though the newspaper, which I have now changed to black plastic. I have just put in some cotton wool soaked in sugar water and some cotton wool soaked in normal water, because an ant was wandering round expectantly as if to say "is that it do I not get anymore."

That's what I meant by black plastic let's hope it works. ;D
But what I don't get is why they covered the sides themselves because the whole set up is in complete darkness it is only for 15 minutes a day when it isn't covered. For the rest of the time the nest was covered with newspaper.
what ant specie do you want to raise next? Myrm.

It was only 4 sheets of newspaper light could probably get through, oh well lets hope this cover works so I can see into the nest, because I'm pretty sure there are brood down there because of the amount of food taken into the nest. Good luck with your Lasius niger. Are you going to have a journal on them. If you want a large colony you can always try myrmica rubra so that if it starts budding you can have a super colony.

That's a good time to start, you have the whole year for the colony to grow so that it will have more chance of surviving the winter. ;D

They are currently eating the spider I put in earlier because it reappeared this morning half buried. Is it normal for Lasius flavus to bury their food?

The ants have dragged the spider and piece of grass further away from the nest entrance, which is now a centimeter wide, but continue to feed from the spider. I have just put a freshly killed fly. No casualties yet. ;D

The ants were not out today but there were signs of the ants being out at night, because one of the plant stems I put in for the aphid was covered with sand. Strangely the aphid did not want to stay on the plant stems and started climing the sides so I put the lid back on. No casualties yet. ;D

The ants have not been out for the past few days so I was worried they all died in a mining accident. Today though I saw a small worker tentatively walking towards the squashed bluebottle I put in yesterday, which then rushed back in almost falling down the entrance soon after light came in. ;D

Thanks I'll keep that in mind. By the way the news about the aphid on the cut up plant stems it didn't stay on the plants and went for a wander. I think they may have took it into the nest but I have no way of knowing. ;D

I have not updated this journal recently because I have been away for the past few days. Luckily this encouraged them to dig against the glass. I saw the queen sitting in a chamber wth a few workers tending her, which did not like the light getting in at all. No casualties yet. ;D

Today at around ten (PM) I saw the queen move from one chamber to another, but she had to come out onto the sand to get to the other chamber. She was very slow, first only her head popped out, then her thorax, then my parents made me go to bed. So I missed the end. I saw some larvae in the nest though so it wasn't all bad. I use a red torch to look at them. I have just noticed that the aphid and the leaf I put it one were both missing, maybe they took this one underground. No casualties yet. ;D
