Hey ant hill! After a year of visiting this forum, I've decided to start a journal on a recently captured queen (24 June). I'm rather excited to do this, because reading other ant journals is something that I really enjoy, so I hope I'll do a good job and write interesting stuff. Two things before I start: 1st English is not my first language, I'm portuguese, so I don't promise a perfect writing. 2nd I'm not really sure which species I'm dealing with. Wood~ant told me It looked like It belonged to the genus Lasius, as I suspected. If anyone could help me with that, I'd appreciate So let's start. I caught my queen in my backyard during a mating flight. As I had a spare formicarium I made last year with my father. As I wanted do be sure that she would move to the sand, I dug a small hole near the place where the plastic tube reaches the wood frame so she would have enough space to settle. I placed her genly on the plastic tube and waited for her to walk to it's end, to the formicarium itself. As far as I can see, she didn't left her little hole, so I assume she must have settled in and started laying eggs. I'll try to include photos and uptade this journal frequently, though if everything goes well I'll not update this for a few weeks, until the first workers emerge.

Just one observation that may be worth mentioning, and that is your set up is filled with sand. Ants can live in just sand, but be aware that dry sand collapses very quickly and can bury them alive, so keep it moist at all times.

No worries on that front. My other colony also lives on a fish tank filled with sand, so I'm used to check how damp it is regularly
