One warm summer day, I was out walking on the sidewalk and I came across a formica fusca queen. She was black and a little shiny. She looked pretty healthy so I put her in a 12x12 container. She dug a hole and trapped herself in it like most formica fusca queens do once they find a nesting site. After about 20-30 days, I came to look at what she had been doing and I spotted a worker in her nest. Her first worker had emerged but then she stopped laying eggs. I offered her sugar water and she liked it but still she did not lay eggs. I put a heating pad under the container but that didn’t make a difference either. Every time the worker tries to break out of the sealed nest, she seals it back up again. She will probably die soon if she doesn’t produce any more workers. What should I do about this problem? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Does she have larvae and/or cocoons? If so thats normal (I think), they normally wait for the first batch to almost hatch before laying more. As for sealing the hole up, thats probably normal too, as they normally wait till the second batch of brood has almost hatched before venturing out. 1 ant shouldn't be out on her own at such an early age, and the queen knows that ;D.
