2 days ago, I purchased a colony of Myrmoteras Cuneonodum with 11 - 25 workers from Antstore for a total of £150, these species are just amazing to watch, when I first purchased them I didn't think much about them until they arrived 2 days ago, they are a type of "trap jaw ant" & there hunting is fascinating to watch, if the ants feel threatened they open their mandibles wide into almost a straight line. I put them in their formicarium & before I new it, they were already out hunting, their behaviour is amazing as is their eye sight, they stand on high ground & walk round in circles to study the area they are in. they have made a nest underneath a dead leaf which seems a bit strange but it's only early day's, they are also extremley agressive, anything in their path they will latch onto with their mandibles

I new that the formicarium I set up for them didn't seem right, as when I put the original test - tube back into the formicarium they all left the new nest area & went back inside the tube. the formicarium seemed to be a little to flat, does anybody have any ideas on how I should have the formicarium (plants, terrain) etc etc

it's quite fascinating watch these girls drink sugar water, there extremley long mandibles seem to get in there way when they are drinking so they have to get right down low and stick there abdomens up to the sky. I also find there eye sight fascinating, just a few minutes ago one workers was sat at the bottom of the tube, when another worker came from outside back into the tube, she was walking along the top of the test-tube, and you could see the worker inside the test-tube watching her as she was walking along the top of the tube, the worker was looking directly up at the other worker and moving her head to the direction of the worker, this is extremely fascinating

today I gave these girls a choice between honey water, and sugar water, they seem to despise the honey water, but love sugar water. I found a little piece of interesting information today, apparently this species is a primitive species, meaning that they are similar to their ancestors, they live in very small colonies & don't use chemical signals, they use their eyes to navigate there way around. very alien
