Hello Ant Hill World Forum members! I have been a member of the forum for quite a long time but do not post regularly ( I will certainly try to remedy this as much as possible). I would welcome you all to check out www.tarheelants.com, a website dedicated to ant keeping supplies. We are based in the U.S. but do ship world-wide regularly. With shipping typically being high for international orders, we have recently added some smaller all-in-one style formicaria to our product list in an effort to combat the issue. Thanks!

This the kind of formicarium I would love to keep a colony in, but apart from what may be a high cost, how is it escape proof as I cannot see a lid?

The lid is just off in the photo you show. The standard lid is black with a stainless steel mesh vent installed. For this formicarium there is an option for a clear 1/2 inch thick acrylic lid in place of the black for a small increase in price. I am unfamiliar with how to add attachments here. Despite my best efforts I have failed. Here is a link to a page with some photos of the lid in question. www.tarheelants.com/family-album/haven-and-pinnacle?nggpage=2Mordam

Okay, I now see what you mean. I must admit I like your designs, are they easy to add water and food; and also to keep clean, as I know how my own ants love to make piles of rubbish and choose a spot for their midden which can often be a bit hard to get at.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I have been swamped the last couple of months. The hydration of the Ytong underground in these designs is significantly improved than with a stand-alone Ytong nest. You can over-hydrate them and to help prevent this I have added vents along the bottom side of the formicarium and pegs on each corner to allow airflow under the nest. Cleaning them out has serious challenges, but they are for larger colonies so in most cases keeping them clean is not an issue as they have plenty of workers dedicated to trash removal. The option to split the formicarium into different sides is one that has advantages as well. It allows you to move your colony from one side to the other should they grow a threatening pile of trash. Then you can plug up the sides as well and use a vacuum while a cork stopper prevents any ants from being sucked up. I have done this and it takes ssome effort but it is well worth it in order to save the health of the formicarium and inhabitants. We recently released a smaller version "The Mini Pinnacle", which is featured on the front page at www.tarheelants.comHope that helped a bit and I will make it a point to contribute here more. This is an excellent resource for ant keepers (the forums and website). Mack

We have a special going on for this month (August). The Pinnacle formicaria comes with a free Piece of Haven (a starter size formicarium) or a choice of t-shirts that will be up on the website in the next few days. Thanks for everyone who has ordered this year thus far!
