My Lasius nigers have over wintered in a cold pantry. I have checked them three times (I was discrete, only bothered them for a minute or two). Yesterday when I checked, the main chamber was full of eggs and workers, the queen was active (must have annoyed her). Her colour seemed to have changed, her abdomen was translucent, not as dark, more toffee coloured. I will wait until the beginning of March to bring them out. How can I encourage them to venture out into their foraging box for nibbles? Is it just about raising the temperature?

Basically yes, by warming the ants up a few degrees activity should increase enough for the workers to forage for food.
