Although all 3 of my colonies are a long way off from producing alates I've been wondering what happens when a pet colony starts producing alates. Do they still swarm/come to the surface in order to mate at the appropriate time? Or do they simply live and die inside the formicarium? Also just wondered if anyone has been successful at rearing a colony to the point where it starts producing alates?

It depends a lot on how old the colony is, and how well it has done. Sometimes alates die or are killed if they cannot fly from the nest, and most ant species fly from the nest to mate to avoid inbreeding.

I've seen a big Crematogaster scutellaris colony producing alates in captivity. Sadly males swarmed a week before females, so no mating was observed.
