Its great to have a forum like this. I find myself reading up the posts and before I know it, spend a lot of time. I recently decided to try my hand at keeping ants. Trouble is I stay in Bangalore, India. The good part is that I'm sure we have a lot of species of ants here, the bad part the information available is not organized. I will keep a look out to get a queen. In the meantime wanted to check if any one knew what species of worker I have. Its small about 5 mm caught in my apartment's parking lot. Thanks. Note to admin: please move if posted in the wrong section, thanks.

Hi kev and welcome to the Ant Hill. I am not sure yet what the ant is, but she does have pronounced spines which may help to ID her if you can get a clear close up of her?

Thanks Wood. Not sure if I can get a better camera, read your post about identification of ants through blurry pictures being difficult. Will try and borrow a friend's camera over the week. I got in touch with a professor at a university here just so that I can put together some general information about the ant species around. Hope with her help I will be able to make some more contributions to this forum and get some information on the mating flights here in India for the benefit of folks in the forum from my area. If any, wish they exist Also think a friend of mine is giving me a species of harvestor ants for my birthday, not sure how he's getting it anyway will post details on that when I get a chance. This is exciting

It could be Myrmicaria sp. or Polyrhachis sp. maybe, need a better photo. I think you have many interesting species in your country!

Thanks for the help, turns out it's Myrmicaria brunnea. One of the most common ant species around here apparently. Still on the look out for a queen. Will keep the forum updated as soon as I get find one.
