I purchased a 13w heat mat to encourage my ants to move with a little heat into a fresh tube. I was just wondering how you would go about using one of these properly to encourage them to move. I guess with the extra heat there will be a build up if condensation in the tube?

For what species do you wish to use a heat mat for?

Putting them under a strong light would encourage Lasius niger to move just as well, better in fact as heating them will make them want to stay put in the old test tube. Cover the tube you want the ants to move into and tape it onto the one they're in, then just keep them in strong sunlight or under a lamp and they should soon move. You don't really need a heat mat for this procedure.

I agree with Wood, but keep the heat mat for if you ever get any ants from warm countries. For native ants though a heat mat is a waste of money.

I'll give it ago I have 5 colonies I'm moving to fresh tubes but one colony just does not seem to want to budge at all even with strong light on them, they don't even flinch.
