That species does not live here in the usa. Does anyone across the pond keep colonies of them? Seems like an interesting species

I have kept temporary colonies for periods of not longer than 3 months, as in captivity they soon become infested with mites and being a wood ant they do need to establish long foraging trails. Like I tell everyone, the wood ants are best studied in the wild and not kept in captivity except for short study. Finding queens may also involve damage to the nest mound, which although it is soon repaired by the thousands of workers, it does disrupt the life of the colony and causes some stress. I once found an entire colony of these lovely ants had been sprayed with silver paint by some moron, >:Dwhich may have been their idea of fun, but it showed that some people have total disrespect for wildlife as far as I am concerned. I intend to do some more videos of Formica rufa over the next few months, so you guys will be able to see some big wild colonies with hopefully large nest mounds.

You should find this topic of interest Tony, as both Jenant and myself love making ant videos; and some of her photos are really cool close up shots. Wild Wood Ant Videos
