I have a Lasius niger queen which I got two weeks ago in a test tube through the post from the Queen ant shop, when she arrived she had no eggs, but she laid some the very next day, so the eggs will be two weeks old tomorrow. The test tube is covered with a piece of red acetate so I can actually see into the test tube and she seems quite happy like that. What I'm concerned about is the water in the bottom of the test tube behind the cotton wool has almost nearly all gone and from what I read it takes 8-10 weeks for the eggs to turn into ants so how do I go about replenishing that water in the bottom of the test tube without upsetting the queen and her eggs and more importantly accidently drowning her!?

It is virtually impossible to replace the water with the ants and brood in the test tube. Your best bet is to try and get her to move into another set up or new clean test tube, taking all of her brood with her, which she will do if she feels the brood is under threat of dehydrating.

Thanks - I'll set up a new test tube and connect it to the old one
