Just to let you guys know that Jenant and I will make an effort to collect both Lasius flavus and L. niger queens this year. This will not be before mid July when the mating flights occur near us, but we will sell them at just enough to cover postage and packing; and we will only sell queens which lay eggs and have brood. Even if they have their first workers the cost will be no more than £5 including P&P. Will update this thread when we get them in stock here at the Ant Hill

What are the chances of being able to catch Myrmica rubra queens? I have never seen a nuptial flight of these.
I had a colony of flavus before, they seemed to be stuck at 8 workers for over a year, it was as if the brood just stopped developing.

What are the chances of being able to catch Myrmica rubra queens? I have never seen a nuptial flight of these. They fly late afternoon into the evening in July and August. Not easy to catch sight of them unless you know where and what to look for.

I have a small colony in my garden but can't pin point the nest entrance, even than it is only a small nest so a nupital flight by them is unlikely.

If you find any Lasius flavus or Myrmica queens during the nuptial flights Wood, I'd probably buy one.

Flavus are generally very easy to get Timenova as their nests are abundant and put out lots of nuptial flights. I will keep an eye out for Myrmica, but being smaller the newly mated queens are not so easy to spot, and then it is timing it right to catch their mating flights.
Should get plenty of Lasius flavus with very little trouble though.

I have, (or rather Jen has) collected several newly mated Lasius niger queens. These will be on sale very cheap in about 7 days or so from today. I will charge very low prices (probably about £5 for 2) as this will cover P&P and any profit goes to a local wildlife charity. I hope to have some flavus queens a bit later if we can catch their flights, and perhaps some other ant species later in the year if all goes well.

All except 2 of the captured queens now have laid eggs. If these 2 queens do not lay eggs, then they will not be sold, as I will only sell on those which have a fair number of eggs or larvae.
I only have a total of 8 for sale, until hopefully I get some Lasius flavus later. The price will be fixed at £5 for 2 queens, as I am not selling single queens. PM me if you are interested, and I can only accept cash, cheques or Postal Orders please.

I will be selling a total of 12 Lasius flavus queens, 2 per test tube as queen coalitions work well with this species, so 6 test tubes in all. Again they will only be sold when they have laid eggs, and the price for this species is £7 including P&P for 2 queens.

P&P costs are charged at £2 on all ants I sell, so the price will vary if a member decides to buy say 4 Lasius flavus queens which are priced at 2 (both in one test tube) for £7 which includes P&P.
The price for 4 queens will be £10 plus £2 for P&P, making the total cost £12.
As I am limited to stocks, I prefer to sell no more than 4 queens to any one member.
So if you want just 2 L. flavus queens you pay £7, or add on £5 for 4 queens; but this is limited to the number I have. Lasius niger prices remain fixed at £5 for 2 queens. Queens of both Lasius species will only be sent once they have a good clutch of eggs/larvae; and no cheque will be cashed until your ants have been posted with brood. If you do send cash, please remember it is at your own risk if this goes missing in the post; and do not send a large amount over the value of £5.
Any profit made by the sale of ants from me goes to saving wildlife in Britain.

We can't collect rubra queens, we have a wild nest out the front but never see them fly. We only get nigers and flavus from the flights.

All the L. niger queens have now laid eggs, though a single queen has only laid one egg so far; but the rest have 15+ and are all big healthy queens.
The L. flavus have not laid yet, but it does take 3 to 7 days on average before newly mated queens settle down enough to do so. Some of these queens are a good size, though not as large as their niger cousins; and when sent out I will put an F on the test tube to show which are flavus, and an N for which are niger, although it is easy to tell them apart if you look at the underside of the gaster, which is golden yellow on flavus and a darker brown on niger.
Ants posted by us have never taken longer than 3 days to arrive, and you will be sent a PM when they are in the mail. Please keep information like name and address to PM's for all orders or enquiries.

Today 2 pairs of Lasius flavus queens have laid a few eggs, so I am expecting the others to lay over the next 2 to 3 days. As one member has placed an order, they will be sent the queens which have laid a good sized clutch, which hopefully will be by Tuesday, as the niger queens are laying at a very good rate now.
