I came across this ant in the French Alps today, can anyone ID it please?

She is definitely in the Formica rufa group, but doesn't look like F. sanguinea so more likely F. aquilonia or rufa. Any idea of her size?

No, I didn't measure it. Considerably larger than Lasius niger though, if that helps.

No, I didn't measure it. Considerably larger than Lasius niger though, if that helps. Was it near woodland or on open ground? If the latter it could be possibly F. rufibarbis or F. cunicularia, but from the photo it looks more of a wood ant to me.

It was in woodland, I've seen a lot of these in the past few days - one large nest and it looked like they had just come out of hibernation and were spring cleaning the nest.

It was in woodland, I've seen a lot of these in the past few days - one large nest and it looked like they had just come out of hibernation and were spring cleaning the nest. If the nest was a mound of pine needles and other bits of dried plant material then it is a wood ant Formica species.
