I've collected a queen two years ago in central Thailand, she started to lay eggs but died after about one month. How do the workers looks like? Something similar to Pheidologeton?

The workers of this species are extremely small about 1-2 mm in size! They are also an attractive yellow / orange colour. According to literature available the queen is unable to found a colony on her own. When she leaves the parent nest on her flight several workers attach themselves to her legs and go fly-about with her. Then after she has mated and dug a chamber in the earth these founding workers help her care for the first batch of brood. However: last year I captured about twenty queens of this species and could not find a single worker attached to any of them. They all dug chambers and laid eggs. Then over time all but two died! However the two that survived did raise a brood of workers on their own and the colonies got up to about 100 worker size before I imported them back to the UK - and the stress of importing finished them off! There are reports that this species preys on a specific termite and colonies are founded alongside mounds of termites which are used as the first food. It is a species that is not often offered for sale and when it is available it is only the queens that are offered - my advice is don't buy just a queen as the chance that they will be able to raise a colony is very low and you will be wasting your money. I will be experimenting with boosting mated queens with brood and workers this year and hopefully will be able to offer young colonies in the autumn.

The alates of this species have just recently flown in Northern Thailand. Having collected quite a few fertile queens I am now hoping to be able to raise some young colonies. The photo is a colony produced from one of last years alates.

Amazing how tiny the workers are in comparison to the queen.

Amazing how tiny the workers are in comparison to the queen. Just what I thought too. You'd expect such a massive sized queen to have larger workers, or at least a varied assortment of caste sizes.

On the upside though, having such small minions must have a lot faster turnover from egg to worker. Very beneficial for the queen in the founding stage who could get a lot of workers produced starting off quite quickly, when she has such large reserves & her much smaller brood demanding so little. These colonies must get quite large I'd assume. Also hunted and prized as a delicacy it seems: www.bangkokpost.com/learning/learning-from-news/233638/hunting-for-ants-as-food
