Anyone got a guess for when queens will start flying in Irealnd/UK? I am on holidays from 21st June for two weeks so hopefully before or after then. If it matters, there is either one/two massive Lasius niger colonies or 8-12 small colonies

Lasius niger tend to fly any time from mid June onwards to August, depends on the weather.

How long do Queens scurry before finding a suitable place to nest?
I mean how long after the mating flights do you have to find a queen?

I have gone out the following morning to find the odd queen still looking for her nest site. But after that the chance is gone. Flights are very dependant on the weather conditions. The first signs are the winged alates coming to the surface trying to work out when the time is right. This is followed by the winged queens, but I have seen this happen several times over several days and still kept waiting, a puff of wind or temperature change and they all retreat.
