There's about 17 colonies of Lasius niger trying to get in my house through the cracks in the walls They will be doomed colonies if they try and make nests in them. But I do worry a little that they are driving other species of ants out of garden.
Brill photo's by the way

A good photo Mako, nigers always oblige when there's food about. So much so, they have tried to cart off many a fly I have caught, really meant for our indoor ants, and I just haven't picked it up in time

Brill photo's by the way Hi Shane, thank you for the compliments! I used my iPhone, but it's not made for Macro shots. I would love to get a proper camera for it, but they can be expensive. I think I will have a forage in the camera chamber for suggestions later! Don't worry- in my garden Myrmica rubra, Lasius flavus and Lasius niger all live together in peace. Lasius flavus forage underground, so don't make much contact with others. I have seen rubra and niger meeting, touching antanne and ignoring each other. Of course the odd fight breaks out! More fighting occurs between same species. I have 2x Lasius niger wars every Spring for territory! I also have Pharaoh ants (Monomorium pharaonis) over running in the house, but that's another story, as they are out of control and I need to move them on if you know what I mean?! I don't like to mention p*** c****** on this ant forum...

Oh you haven't got the dreaded Pharaohs Ants in your home? When I worked at the Pychiatric hospital, I come across them several times. They were in the furniture, clothing, patients bodies and hair were crawling with them where they sat on the furniture. Of course in that situation they did use the p *** c****** word, that us ant keepers hate to use. Hospitals also have the right enviroment for them, hot and humid.

I'm afraid so Jenant..I love ants and Myrmecology of course, but these guys have to go! There nests bud off with many Queens, they don't need mating flights etc... A real pain, but you have to admire there adaptability I guess... they are spreading fast threw Southern UK.

I'll have them if you find the queens. :-)
